WanTok Tonga Network Up for Calls, SMS & Money Transfers

WanTok Tonga Network Connections are restored after Volcano Eruption Disaster

25 January 2022, Tongatapu, Tonga: WanTok Tonga Network connections have been restored, this means that WanTok Mobile App users can now contact family and friends back in Tonga. Late on Monday evening, WanTok was able to restore network connectivity. Now WanTok Mobile App users can Call / SMS family and friends in Tonga through the WanTok Mobile App.

WanTok Tonga Network is UP now

Speaking from WanTok Tonga’s Headquarters today, Country Manager Mr. Dennis Fuapau commented:

"We are so relieved to have restored connectivity to Tonga, so family and friends can get in touch with their loved ones back home to check in on them. It’s been tough for those abroad waiting to hear from their family here in Tonga.”

He continued, “To get to this point, there has been incredible support from partners like Spark NZ, Intelsat, the MEIDECC Office, Digicel and TCC, WanTok Pacific and the WanTok Team in Vanuatu. We are so thankful and grateful for their help. Added to this the WanTok Tonga Network Team has gone above and beyond to ensure that this connectivity could be established. We do ask that those using the services keep contacts short so that more people are able to check in with family here in Tonga. Currently the connectivity is via satellite and bandwidth is limited, until the undersea cable is restored.”

The WanTok Mobile App can be downloaded from the Google Play or App Store and used to call and SMS all mobile networks in Tonga.

In addition, WanTok Tonga has reduced the money transfer fees for those needing to send money home from New Zealand or Australia. Money Transfers from New Zealand cost $2 and $1 from Australia. Furthermore, there are zero withdrawal fees. Money remittances with WanTok Money have been up and operational since Thursday 20th from the WanTok Office, at PTH in Tongatapu.

WanTok Money transfers are securely facilitated via Klickex Pacific and arrive quickly in Tonga.

“Currently we are asking those sending money to be mindful of strong banking restrictions on-island, favouring small transactions. No delays are anticipated, and WanTok staff will contact all recipients to assist with cash collections from the PTH Office in Tongatapu” said Mr. Fuapau.

Launched in 2020, WanTok Money provides a network neutral approach, meaning that all mobile networks in the Kingdom of Tonga can receive money transfers using the service. For more information visit: www.wantokmoney.com
